It appears the earlier secondary eyewall merged with the primary eyewall quickly, similar what happened in Hurricane Milton. That merger may have paused intensification, but Melissa appears to be making its move to Cat. 5 tonight. Certainly has that look. Next set of recon. missions will be telling.

A barrage of cloud-to-ground lightning produces a pink glow under the cloud deck and casts a purple hue off the low cloud base. The stunner for me- a bright center bolt cutting through the scud. Just amazing. Captured indoors at a responsible distance. Probably could do some more work on this- but I love this moment. Mono no aware.

This summer’s visits to Mt. Rainier were selective, as it wasn’t a remarkable bloom year for wildflowers due to drought conditions. Still, this gave opportunity for the tougher alpine flowers like Pink Mountain Heather to standout across the rocky terrain.

Class today was about submarine lava‐flow morphology. wearing my first true autumn outfit of the season. These flows can be even more variable than those on land, thanks to factors like depth, viscosity, effusion rate, & seafloor slope (details in caption). Images: dx.doi.org/10.5670/ocea... 🧪🌋🌊⚒️
Four examples of typical submarine lava-flow morphologies, arranged clockwise by decreasing cooling rate, with me in the center showing off my new shoes today. The rate and geometry of cooling reflects things like how fast the lava is effusing from the vent, how fast it is moving across the sea bed (e.g., from slope variations), and the viscosity of the magma.
