Open up Blonde on Blonde and there's a full-size Bob!

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas made this record click for me, as Hunter S. Thompson hears it and feels the same amphetamine psychosis Bob Dylan felt.

Happy 59th bday to this gem.

5 years already since Bob Dylan released Rough and Rowdy Ways.

I never felt more in-the-know than when I heard Key West's opening lines, taken right from *White House Blues*—probably Charlie Poole's version.

Maybe next year I'll have this one on vinyl 😎

58 years ago, Otis Redding put some soul into the Summer of Love.

Rest Easy, Sly.

Sly Stone was a musical genius in every sense—single-handedly pushing soul music to the forefront of countercultural protest and pioneering funk and proto-hip hop in the process. Sadly, with that genius came some demons.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers released *Hard Promises* 44 years ago today

Tom proved he was a man of the people with this one, threatening to name the record *Eight Ninety-Eight* if the distributors raised the price to $9.98. The world needs more of his energy.

Paul McCartney & Wings released Red Rose Speedway 52 years ago today.

Between the outtakes from *Ram* and the Hold Me Tight/Lazy Dynamite medley, I’ve always loved this record. Can’t help but think of how great it could’ve been as a double album though!

55 years ago, Paul McCartney released his solo debut

This is an album that grows on you. At first listen, it feels unfinished—especially versus usual Beatles productions.

Despite his depression, Paul’s debut feels warm and homey—plus he plays every instrument!

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ *Kiss My Amps Vol II* turns 9 today

Recorded between May and June 2013, this album captures that atmospheric vibe Tom and the band nailed in their later shows.

The covers here of Willin’ and Tweeter & the Monkey Man are sublime.

David Bowie released *Let’s Dance* 42 years ago today.

I sing the title track out loud every time I hear it on at the store.

Love how he plays with light and color in the lyrics:
*Put on your red shoes
Dance the blues
While color lights up your face
Under the moonlight*

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers released *Echo* 26 years ago today.

Tom’s in a lot of pain on this record, going through divorce and heroin addiction. But man did it fuel some amazing songs.

“Room at the Top” alone would’ve put him in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Happy earthstrong to Bunny Wailer, who would’ve been 78 today.

I’ll be honest—I’ll take any excuse to post this album cover.

Bunny’s vocals have this bright, uplifting quality. The Wailers sound grew much deeper and foreboding after he and Peter left.

Bob Dylan released Nashville Skyline 55 years ago today.

There’s a lot to love about crooner Bob, but I never get tired of Lay Lady Lay.

With his voice washed out in reverb and that sliding steel guitar, it makes for the most mystical country sound.

48 years ago, The Clash released their UK debut.

Joe Strummer’s lyrics are a refuge for me. Songs like Career Opportunities helped me through some tough times when I was unemployed.

What I would pay to hear his take on the world today.

HBD Muddy Waters

Cracking this one open fresh tonight for the man himself.

Muddy’s electric blues band changed the game for recorded music. With Jimmy Reed, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, and Fred Below, he set the template for every rock band that followed.

Happy heavenly bday to Leon Russell

Between recording with two Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Clapton, Joe Cocker, and Elton John, this guy was everywhere.

Incredible resume, incredible talent.

49 years ago today, Led Zeppelin released Presence.

From Jimmy Page recording 12 guitars on Achilles Last Stand to Robert Plant delivering his vocals on For Your Life from his wheelchair, this album is over-the-top Zeppelin at their finest.

HBD to Eric Clapton

I’ll be honest—It’s tough to separate his impact from his politics and personal issues these days.

But, he’s the reason I and many others picked up guitar, and a big help in keeping the legacy of older blues artists alive.

32nd anniversary of last Kinks studio album—Phobia.

While far from perfect, the album does have some nice moments. Scattered is a perfect a bookend to The Kinks’ career.

Ray singing about social issues and mental health always makes me feel more understood.

Happy 52nd anniversary of my second-favorite Led Zeppelin album, Houses of the Holy.

Always thought it was funny how the title song didn’t make it onto the album. Glad some songs about the rain, ocean, mountains, and Vikings did though.

Just a little homage to Keith Richards and the fine art of guitar weaving.

No pedals, just some Dry-Z pickups and the DI signal from my Ampeg!

And yes, wearing a Rolling Stones t-shirt and patch at the same time is something the cool kids do 😎

40th anniversary of this masterpiece from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

Southern Accents is like the Heartbreakers’ *Who’s Next.* The southern restoration album idea didn’t take off, but like that Who album, the pieces of the project make one of my favorite albums.

HBD to legendary producer, Bob Ezrin

He’s one of the key producers to define *that* direct, immediate sound of 70s records.

He’s behind the desk on Kiss’s Destroyer album, Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Lou Reed’s Berlin, and endless Alice Cooper albums.

39 years ago today, The Rolling Stones released Dirty Work.

At the time I can see why it got so much hate—it’s the band’s divorce album—but in retrospect, the boys show that even when they hated each other, they could still groove better than anyone.
