I like AI much less than I expected two years ago, when I was in awe with the progress. I thought it would replace boring work and free up creativity, but people are still poor and working hard, and AI slop replaces creativity and authenticity. It may change, but so far it is a net loss in my world.

As rich Arab nations become more integrated in international science and culture, it is often forgotten what they are: cruel dictatorships. You see people giving passionate lectures about creating a better world on a stage in Dubai, where there is no democracy. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

I can very well imagine that pain could be a subconscious reflex like our pupils dilating and constricting and still be functional. 'Why did I do that? O my system was avoiding pain.' That would make life a lot less miserable.

A lot of conversations about consciousness are about self-awareness (how objective neurons create a subjective 'I am') but for many people it is more urgent how a sensation like pain can exist: from neurons firing to inescapable subjective horror rather than just a series of functional reflexes

Earlier I wrote about how traumatic loneliness can be exacerbated by existential loneliness. One artist perfectly expressed that in his art. From a child's trauma (look at the isolated people in the background) to alienation from other people to an "infinite scream passing through nature".

What is deadly is that existential loneliness and loneliness from trauma look so similar. Existential loneliness is universal but can be transformed into peaceful aloneness. Trauma is relatively small, but the confusion with existential loneliness makes it feel like it is everywhere and forever.

'Enige kandidaat.'

The lie of modern architecture is the same as the lie of capitalism: that we are in a time of freedom, we can do what we want. In reality, individual humans need a support system, both a practical infrastructure and a culture to shape their brain and then to shape reality.

Niemand vindt Timmermans inspirerend.

If populism is (as this argues) a rebellion against System 2 thinking—which requires symbols and remains frustratingly hard for most of us—it seems we’re stuck with it forever.
If only we could make some kind of, idk, cognitive prosthesis for symbolic reasoning? Yeah, never mind. Sounds hard. +

I notice if I start from unsaturated colors it is really hard to work toward stronger colors so I try the other way around, start with clashing colors and slowly try to find more subtle harmonies
