George Royle’s Fol de Rols theatrical entertainment group, based at Scarborough’s Floral Hall from 1911-1914. Photographer: Boxell & Co. The business of Thomas Boxell born in Brighton in 1845, in Scarborough from about 1880.

Thomas Huggins came from Surrey to work in Oliver Sarony’s Scarborough photographic studio during the 1860s. He soon set up a rival business, by 1881 he was in Leeds + later found in York + Hull.

Built over a nearly 11 year period Scarborough’s Marine Drive was only accessed by those paying a toll between 1908 and WW2. Photographer: A. Hickman, Museum Terrace, Scarborough. Anyone know anything about him?

This chap, Mr Cornwall is wearing what we’d love to for this New Years Eve party! Very smart in 1864. Beckett and Willis had a short lived partnership between 1863 and 1866, both continuing their business in Scarborough after the partnership was dissolved.

Edward Taylor was born in Scarborough in c.1848. By 1879 he was advertising his photographic studio near the Promenade Pier. He worked on the sands during the season.

George Willis was know for his views of Yorkshire Abbeys. Like many other photographers his bread and butter was portraiture. This one is unusual as just these has been cut out and mounted on this carte de visite.

James Townsend Wigney was a Huddersfield photographer who during the summer seasons of the 1860s set up a studio in Scarborough Assembly Rooms. His portraits of theatrical celebrities and politicians can be found in national museum collections.

Oliver Sarony is probably the best known of all of the Scarborough photographers. His studio on South Cliff was at one time the largest in Europe. This carbon print cabinet card with an unknown sitter illustrates why he was so well known.
