Mark Rutte, joked that "Daddy sometimes has to use strong language", to Donald Trump's use of profanity. In a remark to reporters a day earlier, Trump had said: 'We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing'

A D-Day veteran called a gracious and humbled Zelenskyy a hero.
March 1, 2025 at 6:36 AM
U.S. Senator Adam Schiff of California weighed in on the situation in Washington, stating: “A hero and a coward are meeting in the Oval Office today. And when the meeting is over, the hero will return home to Ukraine,” he wrote.

Z's treatment makes me want to weep with rage.
March 1, 2025 at 8:25 AM
I know that the great, noble much-loved Z. has been shat upon by mean, petty, poison tree-frogs and I will NOT read about it online, any where, at any time. I'll get all my info from Ukraine based sources, e.g. Espreso, RFE, etc. Slava Ukraini!

in the TLS for Feb. 21 Ian Samson's article asks: who are these words about & who wrote them. "Guess who’s back? He is a thief, and a glutton, a coward, and a boaster, always ready to cheat the weak, and prey upon the poor; to terrify the timorous and insult the defenceless.” the-tis.co.uk

'I hear you're a racist now, Father' - Father Ted episode now comes with trigger warning. Wait! I've seen every episode of Father Ted about 10 times AND I've lived in Ireland for 10 years. EVERY episode should have a trigger warning "Irish portrayed as idiots". But nobody takes offence here.

Yes! Lucy Letby’s legal team will reveal “significant new medical evidence” after an independent review by 14 medical experts into the cases of 17 babies allegedly harmed by the nurse. It is understood that the experts have found no evidence of deliberate harm but other varying causes of death.

That the behaviour of dictators is perfidious is not surprising. But that [we] still crave authoritarians despite their appalling record of failure, is incomprehensible. With these monstrous examples right before our eyes how are we so stupid [as] to lie to ourselves again and again? E. Canetti 1969

HCM 1 & 2 is still the only single-author work to treat 2000 years of philosophical ideas about mind, soul and spirit in the western tradition; with detailed coverage of 66 authors over 400 pages; vol. 2 covers 75 more authors over 440 pages, both vols. with copious chapter bibliographies.

My book History of the Concept of Mind came out in 2003; vol 2 came out in 2007. Then Routledge absorbed my publisher & my 2 books slid to the bottom of their backlist. In the first 18 months HCM sold out its 1000 copy print-run; now it sells 10-20 a year. Despite my entreaties R won’t reissue it.

From The Guardian 31 Jan. "The internet’s go-to gathering place for those who rate and revere sticks is big and growing fast. The appeal is simple. soon, all over the world, people began sending photos and videos of their own sticks for review." IS THIS A SPOOF? OR A HEADLINE STORY ABOUT NOTHING?!

The 6-part Netflix series "American Primeval" reminds me in many ways of Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridien". The same decade (1850s), although now in Utah, not the SW & Mexico, eerily resonant themes. Negative picture of early Mormon settlers, not any better than McCarthy's "filibusters".

A popular UK pizzeria has started charging £100 for a ham and pineapple-topped pizza. The owners and staff of Lupa pizza in Norwich are revolted by the Hawaiian combo. The menu description reads: “Yeah, for £100 you can have it. Order the champagne too! Go on you Monster!”

Here’s the citation: Rachel Aviv, “A British Nurse Was Found Guilty of Killing Seven Babies. Did She Do It?” Colleagues reportedly called Lucy Letby an “angel of death,” and the Prime Minister condemned her. But serious questions about the evidence were ignored. The New Yorker, May 13, 2024.

The Guardian 8 Jan. "Lucy Letby retrial needed after ‘clear miscarriage of justice’. MP tells parliament he believes justice has not been done after hearing experts' concerns over former nurse’s murder convictions." Just what I've thought ever since reading The New Yorker article.

Allied to this alternative history of ideas it was very fruitful to study literary fiction as a form of philosophy, e.g. Wm. Gass, Pessoa, Proust, Musil, Bloch, Mercier, etc. This is laid out in my last book, Nature Loves to Hide (2018), still unpublished, but available from Amazon.

10 years teaching Husserl’s phenomenology was more than enough; I no longer wanted to be one of 1000s of researchers, all saying & writing the same things, with limited source material. So I turned to esoterica & heterodox philosophy, one of a smaller crowd in a huge domain, often unexplored.

In Asif Kapadia’s film 2073 the worst fears of modern life have been realised. Spy drones fill the burnt orange skies, police roam the wrecked streets, survivors hide underground, climate change is out of control & Big Tech supports dictators -- but this is not the past, it’s our dystopian present.
