Relatedly, Dems losing the senate in 1980 was really costly. They didn’t get it back until 1987, so Reagan had a rubber stamp on judges for 6 years

It wasn’t 90’s neoliberals that made this observation. Postwar policymakers did. They viewed protectionism/trade wars as a major contributor to the breakdown of the international order in the 30’s and resolved to initiate global trade liberalization to achieve stability and peace.

His scorn is largely avoided because he smart enough to avoid going to deep into Iraq and preventing the Helms and Buchanan faction from taking over the party
It’s funny how Bush sr manages to escape a lot of scorn when we talk about the trajectory of the modern GOP. I generally approve of how he handled the end of the Cold War I suppose, but I’m more skeptical of the first gulf war’s legacy and consider the Iran-Contra pardons to be criminal
