The ethnographic museum in Zielona Góra feels like a fairytale. Gorgeous little 18th century houses line a picturesque street, each decorated in its own style. There are many displays showing shops, workshops and farming equipment, as well as gorgeous folk wear.

Yesterday we went to the archaeological museum at Santok. Between the 7th and 13th centuries there was a thriving walled city here at the intersection between old Poland, Pomerania and Brandenburg on the banks of the Warta River. It was first excavated in the 1930s, but excavations continue.

When I lived in Moscow and I heard fireworks in the night, I feared they would be bombs. Here in Poland I hear explosions in the night and I know they're munitions from the nearby military base. Strange how the thought is comforting.

The people who live next door to the office/school where I work stormed in here and scared the bejeesus out of us. They thought we had complained about their loud music. They have a reputation for screaming at each other and yelling obscenities down the stairwell. I'm completely terrified and shook.

Every now and then the reality of that goddamn war smacks me upside the head and I have to hold back tears. Today I made small talk with a student's mum who's a refugee. She used to be a professor at a university in Ukraine. Now she cleans houses and bakes cakes.

On Friday I was driving between two villages when I suddenly had to slam on brakes for two soldiers crossing the road. They gave me very dirty looks, but really it isn't my fault I didn't see them: they were literally wearing camouflage!
