I’m the daughter of Turkish Cypriot immigrants. I grew up in a working class family and am now the leader of Haringey Council, a place I was born and raised.

I’m not an influential voice, but here goes… immigration is not the problem. Lack of hope is.

Stop stoking the fire.
Following a meeting with representatives from our Muslim communities in Haringey, Bibi Khan and I have written to the Foreign Secretary calling for:

- Recognition of a Palestinian state
- An end to arms sales to Israel

Our communities are urging the government to step up

Exactly this.
No-one takes the decision to flee their home from persecution, with little more than the clothes on their back, unless their life depends on it.

That’s why our approach to refugees must be rooted in compassion, empathy and humanity.

Not division, prejudice or scaremongering.

Fantastic news
🚨 NEW: Labour is lifting 100,000 children out of poverty by expanding access to free school meals.

Alongside free breakfast clubs, cheaper uniform costs and government-funded childcare, Labour is putting money in parents’ pockets and giving children the best start in life.

At the Alevi Cultural Centre & Cemevi for the launch of the 13th Alevi Festival.

Poignant speeches reminding us of the current issues that exist across the whole of the Middle East and the history of struggle for the Alevi people, which persist to this day.

There is no denying that Hamas are horrific and that the hostages should be released immediately, but this does not justify what is happening now. Not even close.

The world is watching and praying for an end to this awful situation.

Productive conversation w/ Phil Stevens from Disability Action Haringey on the governments proposed changes to welfare and the potential negative impact on the disabled community in Haringey.

We share these concerns and will ensure that we continue to listen and advocate in support of the community

Great to welcome the youth council from Noel Park primary school today.

Some very tough questions for Andy, Zena and myself on all matters ranging from the climate emergency to politics and our motivations for doing what we do.

Thank you to their wonderful teacher Mr Rasit for arranging it.
