On Saturday we held our first ever People's History walking tour, covering the extraordinary radical history of the inner-Sydney suburb of Glebe. We were expecting perhaps ten attendees, and instead well over 60 people turned up!

On this day 31 May 2015, 40 fascists from the newly-formed 'United Patriots Front' attempted to rally on the steps of Richmond Town Hall in Melbourne, protected by scores of police. They were met by 300-400 anti-fascists, however, who completely prevented them from marching.

On this day 24 Aril 1972, two police arrested Michael Matteson near the University of Sydney over Matteson’s refusal to be conscripted to fight in the Vietnam War. Almost 1,000 students, however, surrounded the police and forced them to release Matteson and retreat in humiliation from the campus.

On this day 8 April 1972, workers constructing the Sydney Opera House ejected management from the site and began running it themselves. With no bosses in the way, workers' job satisfaction soared, and the workers won huge wage increases, reduced working hours, and improved conditions.

On this day 30 March 2002, over 50 refugees staged a mass breakout from the Woomera immigration detention centre in South Australia, where thousands of people who had fled dictatorships were imprisoned in hellish conditions. Many who escaped that day were never recaptured and were later amnestied.

On Saturday we had our first full-day People's History festival, featuring an amazing lineup of panels and speakers discussing Sydney's incredible radical history, with about 150 people attending throughout the day. We can't wait to hold another one!
