Called the Long narrows by Lewis & Clark. Here they portaged a 10 mile section of the rivers rapids. A thriving fishery for ten millennia until the completion of the Dalles Dam in 1956 which made the river navigable. The Columbia river was once the largest salmon fishery in North America.
