How does US aid freeze affect Taiwan's geopolitical interests? In this op-ed for @thediplomat.com, I argue that the military assistance suspension is likely to be temporary for Taiwan. However, Taipei must adjust its aid policy to alleviate the consequences of US aid suspension for its partners.
How the US Aid Freeze Harms Taiwan’s Geopolitical Interests
From the direct (military assistance) to the indirect (waning U.S. influence), the freeze could have dire implications for Taiwan’s foreign policy interests.

Trudeau listed non-tariff actions, incl critical minerals, as part of potential retaliation for tariffs. 2 thoughts 1) Canada is learning trade war tactics from China. 2) It makes it more difficult for US to compete with China on critical minerals, where building alternative supply chain is a must.
Why critical minerals mined in B.C. could stop being exported to the U.S. amid Trump tariffs | CBC News
B.C. Premier David Eby hinted on Tuesday that critical minerals manufactured in Trail, B.C., could be subject to an export ban if proposed tariffs by U.S. president-elect Donald Trump go through. Here...

Off the news cycle for just one day and checked back in to Trump threatening sanctions against Colombia. Tariffs and visa bans are getting a lot of attention, but I'm also curious how wide-ranging the "IEEPA Treasury, Banking and Financial sanctions" would be since "fully imposed" is pretty vague.

TikTok is using platform power on Trump's behalf. What does that mean? My new piece in @goodauth.bsky.social goodauthority.org/news/tiktok-...
TikTok is deploying platform power in unprecedented ways.
TikTok can now create a narrative in which the incoming U.S. president has saved users’ freedom to create and share what they want.

Very proud of my friend @susangrunewald.bsky.social, whose book, From Incarceration to Repatriation, is featured in Foreign Affairs. Aside from being an excellent historian (says the political scientist), she's also the coolest person I know.
From Incarceration to Repatriation: German Prisoners of War in the Soviet Union
Grunewald significantly enhances understandings of the fate of Germans captured by the Soviet Union during World War II.

This is a really interesting report that demonstrates how countries can simultaneously be both a de jure sanction sending state and a de facto third-party state in a multilateral sanctioning regime.
