People who point out that my handle means “pedantic dumbass” are extremely clever, good-looking people who are generous in bed.

I have no words

LOL. Just listened to episode 1, and discovered that Robert said the same thing.

@iwriteok.bsky.social I wondered when you would get around to Lee Atwater. He's my "go back in time and kill as a baby" pick. Deathbed repentance isn't repentance, Lee.

If I ever write a travel book it will have a title like this

Bed and Breakfast Breakfasts: How to eat an improperly cooked and improperly cut soft boiled egg without chewing on too many shells

The cover photo will be a destroyed soft boiled egg in a trash can.

Problem is, it’s an iPhone 12 mini, and Apple doesn’t make a similar size anymore. The smallest phone Apple makes at the moment does not support MagSafe charging, so I will not buy it. I am left with bad options: Pay to fix an obsolete phone, buy a phone I don’t want, or carry a broken phone.

For years, I have watched people walk around with broken phones, using them as if the screens were not broken. For the first time, I find myself pondering whether it’s worth replacing the broken glass on the *back* of my phone, having dropped it yesterday.

I forgot to mention A&W. They are absolutely everywhere in Ontario. If a town is big enough for a Tim Horton’s, it may well have an A&W. If there are two Tim Horton’s, then absolutely.

And upon studied review, butter tarts are 10/10, no notes.

Wait until you see how many times James Carville and John Ossoff have sent email to Allison since the 8th anniversary of her death.

I have been thanking each one for the international roaming fees and telling them to fuck all of the way off.

I note that your comment kind of argues that you’re becoming a Trump supporter, so maybe I am going to have to give you both barrels, too.

Attention Marriott Hotels:

Approximately 40% of adults over 50 have obstructive sleep apnea, and the wealthiest of those are likely to have health care, so it makes no sense for you to ignore the need for power on each side of every bed, including this bed in the presidential suite, for god’s sake.

In case that wasn’t clear, the topic is butter tarts.

We hit up The Queen’s Tarts on the way to the hotel. I have some expat friends who are permanent US residents, and are afraid to visit family in Canada, lest they be forbidden to return.

They will be getting a box next week. Shhhh!

Before we got to Sault Ste. Marie, I searched for the best poutine in town. A common answer was West Side Cafe, a 24-hour diner with an entire page of poutines. We went.

We needn’t have bothered. Poutine desire has completely exited my body. I will take good fries as a side to good food any day.

I think ketchup potato chips would do well in the US. The Old Dutch ones land squarely between salt & vinegar chips and BBQ chips, flavor-wise.

All-Dressed is another matter. We saw at least 4 brands featuring all-dressed chips, and grabbed Old Dutch ripple chips.

To quote Wayne: HARD NO.

Saw one today about an hour north of Sault Ste. Marie. They probably come in handy when there is zero coverage for miles.

One thing I will say about Tim Horton’s is that it’s very clean, and everyone is friendly.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to find one**, but I wouldn’t completely avoid it either.

**Canadians will probably laugh at this line. You have to go out of your way to avoid them. They are everywhere.

Our breakfast sandwiches were unremarkable. We actually stopped at one the other day and grabbed lunch, and both the club sandwich and BLT were disappointing.
August 16, 2025 at 2:48 PM
I probably have nothing original to say about Tim Horton’s.

The coffee is better than the coffee at McDonald’s or Dunkin’ Donuts, each of which has a cult following for mysterious reasons.

The old fashioned donut is decent, and the others we tried were at best mid.

This is the last Canada leg of the Lake Superior Circle Tour, and I am planning to consume some Canadian stereotype foods before it’s too late: Tim Horton’s, butter tarts, poutine, and Old Dutch potato chips (Ketchup and All-Dressed) are on the menu. Capsule reviews in the comments to this thread.

We encountered someone with a flat tire and a broken jack. I unloaded my car to get to my jack, and that’s when I saw it: a tire patch/inflation kit that included an air pump. But no spare. Not even a donut.

Helped the guy and loaded back up. Will take fewer remote chances, given mobile coverage.

My wife enjoys rock hunting, and she put a few remote destinations on our agenda, including a ghost town that was a good 5 miles from the only paved road we saw all day.

Today I learned that my 10-year-old Volvo has no spare tire.

It took a couple of days, but I believe I am finally in the eastern half of Ontario.

In my experience, it takes less time to cross Texas.
