Enjoy making art. You may or may not be able to make a career out of it. But if you enjoy it, learn from it and express yourself, that time wasn't wasted. If you don't enjoy it, it's a lousy career anyway. Making art as a hobby is just as valid.

Find what's best for you.
If you try out rules/advice and find it's not working for you or diminishing your growth or enjoyment, that advice simply isn't for you.
