80 years ago today, Pvt. Bob Campbell shot this photo of the Iwo Jima flag raising. While Joe Rosenthal’s photo became iconic and won a @pulitzerprizes.bsky.social, Campbell’s version offers a unique, alternative angle on history.

If you read anything about the controversy surrounding the iconic "Napalm Girl" photo, it should be this article by David Friend for @vanityfair.com
Who Really Took the Famous “Napalm Girl” Photograph?
A new Sundance documentary, which questions the provenance of a Vietnam War icon, has set off a pitched battle between photojournalists and the filmmakers.

I missed this sensational picture of the late president Carter lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda by Andrew Harnik.

It's a gem of light and composition, and knowingly nods to previous works.

Thanks to @patrickwitty.bsky.social's consitently brilliant Substack.

This photo by Abbie Rowe from FDR's funeral train is why I write Field of View. I'd never seen it before going down the rabbit hole of Presidents lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda.

The ghostly reflections have an American Gothic vibe.

Revisiting some past photos from the Rotunda for FoV and came across this one of JFK lying in state by George Mobley for the Geographic. That beam of light.

Also, the sweater Lee Harvey Oswald was wearing when Jack Ruby shot him was BLACK, not maroon.

There's a viral tweet kicking around comparing these two photos: Luigi Mangione by Charly Triballeau and Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Beers.

It's a perp walk. That's where the similarities end.

The front pages of today's @wsj.com (huge photo of Luigi Mangione by Mike Nagle) and @nytimes.com (no mention of Luigi Mangione). Bizarre.

Luigi Mangione's NYC debut gives off Timothy McVeigh vibes in this perp walk photo by Stephanie Keith for Getty Images. NYC police photog on the right, creating some "content."

Some great work in the @nytimes.com Year in Pictures, but the photos from Gaza are highly sanitized, lacking the raw reality of war. Here's one of many photos taken by Ali Jadalla that should have been included...

I've hit a wall...does anyone know who took these photos of Sirhan Sirhan on June 28, 1968? Long shot, I know, but thought I'd try.
