Two thought-provoking Canadian books that are very relevant at this fraught time.

In the Frame had a successful launch on Sunday. Attendees got a taste of the theme: “When the egos of the art world collide, no frame can contain the fallout!”

I just finished reading Moby Dick, which feels like an accomplishment! I had to reserve an hour a day to get through it, but it was worth it. Melville is often cited in books about writing, so I had to read it. Fantastic epic novel.

The Riveter by Jack Wang is a gripping novel of love and toughness in World War Two, from the perspective of a Chinese-Canadian man. Highly recommended.

You Dreamed of Empires, by Alvaro Enrigue, is a fantastic read, whether you have been to Mexico or not. He throws you into the tension created by the momentous meeting in 1519 between Moctezuma and Cortes. Visceral, funny and imaginative.

The Adversary by Michael Crummey is a brilliant Canadian novel. It’s the best kind of historical fiction, in which his extensive research fuses with his imagination to portray a rugged place and its people. It deserved the 2025 Dublin Literary Award. #booksky 💙📚
