This is catastrophic polling for the Liberals, but I also can't see Hastie or Taylor doing any better with moderate voters.

#Newspoll 58-42 to ALP (yep)

ALP 36 L-NP 24 Green 13 ON 15 IND/other 12

Albanese net 0 (haha) (47-47)
Ley net -29 (26-55)
Better PM (favours incumbents) Albanese leads 54-27.

I genuinely thought that Labor would drop off in the states following the Albanese government's re-election, but it seems people really don't want what the Coalition is selling right now.

Turns out you actually need policy beyond culture wars and some talent in your ranks.

🚨 NEW: Labor holds a strong lead in New South Wales, according to the latest state voting intention polling from DemosAU

One Nation is now just 6% behind the Coalition in the upper house, while Chris Minns has recorded his highest preferred premier rating in any poll since he became Labor leader

Wild. Wrote this article for The New Daily in August 2023, and now we may have the first case of space debris colliding with a commercial airplane.
Space debris could interfere with flights "within five years"
Experts say space debris may start to interfere with commercial flights "within five years," without greater international collaboration.

Always thought One Nation will become a much more effective populist electoral force when Hanson is gone.

That goes out the window if Barnaby Joyce is the heir-apparent. The right-wing fringe of Australian politics is so fragmented, but I can't see Joyce being the one to unite it.

Last Friday I appeared before a Senate committee to talk about the Commonwealth's proposed changes to FOI laws @withmeaa.bsky.social, in my capacity as a working freelance journalist. The changes copy FOI regimes at the state level -- two hours later, one of those states hit me with a charge:

This is an impressive and incredibly important piece of journalism detailing the extent to which private companies can surveil and gather data on individuals - including heads of state, journalists and high-profile people -based solely on a person's digital footprint.

This perfectly captures why I roll my eyes whenever politicians spruik being 'tough on crime' as a policy position.

If I hear another politician say they are tough on crime, I’ll explode
The government and opposition need to decide if they want media moments or meaningful change. What we need, is not tough new laws but a system fit for purpose – and here’s how we might get there.

The only way a sequel to The Social Network would work is by adapting the excellent Careless People into a movie imo.

Warching the evolution of both traditional and social media coverage of Charlie Kirk's killing illustrates how reactive and opportunistic we are as a global society.

Very few people have waited for a clearer picture of the why, and instead jumped at the opportunity to use it for political gain.

Hearing my 60-year-old dad say 'groyper' at lunch today just reaffirmed this.
I used to peruse conspiracy theory forums - like Above Top Secret - in the late 2000s and early 2010s as a teenager, and it's wild to see these niche beliefs that were considered completely outlandish then, even within these communities, having successfully been elevated to the mainstream today.

Every time I read a news article with at least two unnecessary subheadings, I lament the damage WordPress has done to journalism.
September 11, 2025 at 4:08 AM
Framing like this in the NYT drives me insane. It's not 'an alternative reality', it's a lie and falsehood and you need to call it as such.

We're going to see a lot more of this type of selling point and advertising going forward, which is a pretty grim indictment of where we're at in 2025.

maybe we shouldn't run "neo-nazi does [anything]" as the top story on national news websites unless it's meaningfully newsworthy/impactful? these are people who want to exterminate australians + are actively trying to get attention. we can't treat them as normal political players

Labor plans to make it harder to access government information
A new proposal would introduce a fee for Freedom of Information requests and tighten the rules around the release of documents related to government deliberations.

The worst part about this - aside from the privacy concerns obviously - is that you know they'll never use this practice to charge people less. It's just another excuse to price gouge vulnerable people.
