Great to see TES covering our latest poll. Lots of great news – but it shows challenges around finding time to read for fun, and parents’ confidence in their own reading.

Lack of home reading prompts school concerns over language skills
A quarter of parents avoid reading to their children because they lack belief in their own ability, finds Parentkind poll, as schools contend with ‘weaker language foundations’

Should the national year of reading be equally focused on parents as it is on children?

📚Findings from @parentkind.bsky.social & shared with Tes, show that more than a quarter of parents have avoided reading with their children because of their own reading ability:

Lots of news on social media & screen time today!

This announcement from the Department for Education with support from Kindred Squared is very welcome. We know from conversations with parents that screen time is a big worry, so we back plans to help parents reduce time staring at screens.

Great to see @nasuwt-official.bsky.social  teaching union coming out in favour of a full social media ban for children - something parents as well as teachers will welcome!

We welcome the Conservatives' promise to ban social media for under 16s – we hope all parties work for a ban. 87% of parents worry about children accessing harmful content online. The majority tell us they support a ban for under 16s. This is an important announcement for parents.

The Chancellor will have tough choices to make in today’s Budget – but investing in a PTA in every school would give schools a fundraising boost which she won’t need to find the money for! It could get £125 million more into schools, without Government spending!

Budget day tomorrow! Committing to a PTA in every school will strengthen communities and help schools fundraise to support education. Parentkind’s 14,000 members hold more than 120,000 community events each year. Let’s hope the Budget unlocks this superpower for all schools.

PTAs support their communities with pre-loved uniform sales and food banks, and work to support those in need. Already, parents in poverty spend an average of £2,000 a year on school costs. A PTA in every school in England would help cut costs for more families in need.

A PTA in every school will spread opportunity across the country. Schools in more affluent areas and in the south of England are more likely to have PTA support.

We are working to spread the benefits of PTAs – and the Government can support this through the Budget.

With a week to go before the Budget, investing in a PTA in every school in England could give schools an extra £125 million, Parentkind fundraising data suggests.

Here’s hoping for a budget which supports schools and parents to work together!
