Its interesting that in the late 90s there was a market for reprints of the most obscure and convoluted books by Jack Kerouac—Schwartz’s in Milwaukee would stock them all—and they’ve mostly gone out of print since then, titles like Satori in Paris or Doctor Sax.

Musical and literary amnesia: every one of these genres has medieval roots and was widespread in the early modern era, but there is a tendency in literary studies to credit their invention to Bürger and Goethe and leave it at that.
