People saying we should take old books out of schools usually talk about getting rid of specific classics like Charlotte's Web.

I think they'd make more headway arguing all the picture books and levelled readers given to kids to practice reading don't need to be random books from the 1970s.

It's interesting how often books will add something to make the stakes EVEN BIGGER halfway through, and I do not care about those new stakes at all. The original stakes were fine, and now that the book is about something else entirely, I don't want to read it anymore.

The poster did seem open to comments explaining why reading picture books to babies is good, so I don't want to bash her too much. It was just strange to see someone explain at length how they thought deeply about it, and their parenting philosophy is they won't read to their baby.
I found someone on Twitter who has heard about the value of reading to babies but is "dubious" it's true, so doesn't really plan to read to her kid until they're two.

Stuff like this probably explains all the articles about kindergarteners who don't know how to turn the pages of a book.

Interested to start this YA book that came out May 2024 that I never heard of before and has 55 reviews. That's the state of marketing right now, I guess.

YA is apparently so over that no one wants to read our discussion post about it. 🤣

The Heyday of YA Is Over (And Publishers Need to Admit It)
The YA market once boomed because of adult readers, but many have moved on–while publishers have not. Publishers remember when 2005 gave us Twilight, 2008 The Hunger Games, and 2011 Divergent…

With a lot of prolific writers, you can see the "structure" they start using in their books. For some it's the literal plot beats or the catchphrase they gave the protagonist. For Sanderson, I'd say you can tell the main theme he started with, and then the charateristic of the world he's building.

I've not even the world's biggest Sanderson stan. I just think this recent backlash with the arguments his books are actually terrible is a bit ridiculous.

I'm playing with the idea Sanderson's themes are "easy to see" bc his books actually believe in something/have a stance. I read a lot of today's books where the author seems confused what they're even trying to say. It's not "nuanced." It's just confused. Or they have no point at all. It's just fun.

I'm confused by posts saying Brandon Sanderson's books don't have complex themes. I think they all have a theme! Is the criticism the fact that you can TELL there's a theme and it's too "easy" to see the themes?

The most effective way of proofreading a blog post is clearly to post it, then reread it yourself and notice all the typos after 30 people have already read it.

I finally finished a book I started in 2023, so now my StoryGraph stats say I take two months to finish a book on average. 😂
