I think you miss the irony he is pointing out here. He's saying even if all these possible things in the favor of a vote for him were true, supporters must finally admit things have gone off the rails.

This was my favorite book as a child, and I would require my father to read it to me every night sometimes more than once. But I would never let him read the last page. I hated for Grover to be embarrassed.
