Our North Finchley's first win - Barnet Council Planning Committee rejected the Regal/Arada planning application for the Great North Leisure Park. This is just the start of the battle to save the leisure facilities, the Great Crested Newts and to get the housing mix North Finchley needs.

Write to Sarah Sackman, MP for North Finchley, as soon as possible to express your objections to the Governments Homes for London policy note. 1 Developers have too much power 2 People need more good quality homes and this won't create them 3 Local developments are failing our community's needs.

Barnet Council and the developer are trying very hard to avoid making the issue of the large colony of Great Crested Newts in Glebelands a major obstacle to the development. They have played down the issue; however, there are specific instructions from Gov.uk to officers www.gov.uk/guidance/gre...

The Great North Leisure Park is home to the Hollywood Bowl, Vue cinema, several restaurants and Finchley Lido leisure centre. The scheme proposed by Regal London would remove these venues and build 1,485 small and unaffordable flats in tightly packed tall blocks.

A new planning application is in the works for beleaguered North Finchley. The application is for more tower blocks. The land is in the same area covered by The North Finchley Master Plan, but the implications for the latter are unclear. Regal would not comment. How are residents meant to comment?

The North Finchley Masterplan application is delayed apparently owing to ongoing talks with Highways/TfL re traffic management, and recent changes to policy on affordable housing. The delay is likely to be after the local elections, although this has not been confirmed. Interesting timing eh?

Barnet Council planning is a complete mess. We are opposing the Regal development for the destruction of our town centre, This is now on hold until after the May elections. Interesting timing eh?

London is a large city. But it's outer town centres and key suburban sites are being wrecked at a break-neck pace.

In 10 years' time only a few privileged wealthy areas will be free of red brick mega-follies like this. And there will still be a huge shortage of affordable housing.
