The heart of the neighbouring galaxy Messier 82.

A close-in view of the centre of galaxy M82. Bright, bluish light radiating from the centre is due to stars actively forming there. A thick lane of gas, black in the centre and red around the edges, crosses the centre and blocks much of the light. Thinner strands and clumps of reddish dust cover much of the rest of the view.

En ésta segunda foto el sol estaba tapado por el humo pero las nubes abajo recibían luz solar y brillaban. Realmente el cielo se veía extraño y, sabiendo lo que hay alrededor de esta zona (incendios masivos) la sensación era muy desagradable, acongojante. In this second photo, the sun was obscured by smoke, but the clouds below were receiving sunlight and shining brightly. This image returns to a previous target of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, the spiral galaxy NGC 2835, this time incorporating H-alpha emission data.

The regions bright in this emission can be seen in bright pink along the galaxy’s spiral arms.

The skies above Paranal are at risk from a proposed industrial megaproject. 

This would be located in the vicinity of ESO's Observatory. If constructed, it would irreparably impact astronomical observations.

World's darkest and clearest skies at risk from industrial megaproject
On December 24th, AES Andes, a subsidiary of the US power company AES Corporation, submitted a project for a massive industrial complex for environmental impact assessment. This complex threatens the pristine skies above ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile’s Atacama Desert, the darkest and clearest of any astronomical observatory in the world [1]. The industrial megaproject is planned to be located just 5 to 11 kilometres from telescopes at Paranal, which would cause irreparable damage to astronomical observations, in particular due to light pollution emitted throughout the project’s operational life. Relocating the complex would save one of Earth's last truly pristine dark skies.

A spiral galaxy with two thin, slowly-curving arms, one fainter than the other, coming off the tips of a bright, oval-shaped core region. The disc of the galaxy is also oval-shaped and filled with fuzzy dust under the arms. It has some bright spots where stars are concentrated, especially along the arms. The core has a white glow in the centre and thick bands of gas around it. A supernova is visible as a pale blue dot near the core.
