Sure the journey to Mordor seems perilous, but Tolkien’s fondness for detailing the various horses of the journey is the real story so far.

The literal fellowship of the ring was just formed, and instead of an epic speech we get a couple paragraphs about a pony named Bill.

I love it 🐴

Finally reading The Lord of the Rings. Early impression is that Tom Bombadil is super OP.

Finished Baby Steps today. Is it my game of the year? Maybe! What a delight. It’s a hard game to be sure, though to some degree it is only as hard as you want it to be.

You can, for example, climb these stairs or you can take hours climbing around them instead. I did. Now they call me Lord.

Pauline: You sure love bananas, DK!

DK: Pauline, to call it love is too simple. I need bananas. They are my master, and I am their slave. Do you love air, Pauline? Or does it control you? Its very presence, an unnoticed necessity driving your very life.

Pauline: I’m too nervous to sing!

FF4 is now complete. I’m trucking along with my goal of completing every mainline Final Fantasy.

Brief thoughts on 4: It’s a good game, but feels like it’s clinging a little bit to the NES games. They pushed the storytelling hard, and leaned into characters and classes in a good way.

I think I’m almost finished FF4. This game is pretty wild. Definitely not my favourite in the series, but it’s interesting for sure.

There’s humour, death, sacrifice, and a giant robot fight against tanks and airships. Giant mech was not on my bingo card for this game.

And FF3 is also complete now. Moving on to SNES era next with FF4 and FF5.

FF3 was pretty good, and would have clearly been pushing the NES about as far as it could go with its system complexity. Not a lot of story, but the job system was neat.

Well, Final Fantasy 2 was the next game in my quest to complete the series. It’s an interesting one, but it felt pretty flawed at times.

The levelling system was pretty inspired, but it ends up feeling unbalanced. Also, there are some wild difficulty spikes in the game.

Still, it was fun!

I would love a book of Miyamoto’s criticisms and thoughts on games by other developers.

Baby Steps is a delight. Picking up this trophy felt like the hardest thing ever, until I fell off a cliff separating myself from the trophy by hundreds of feet. That’s when true pain set in.

The glamour shot of Toad on his motorcycle in the Mario Kart World menu is divine.

Checking to see if my credit card has been charged for the Switch 2, as if a financial transaction is a deeply held unbreakable covenant between myself and a higher power.

Completed the pixel remaster of FF1. There are some technical issues with the game, but generally speaking it plays well, looks good, and has some nice quality of life items that make the game more frictionless.

Well, it’s been a long time since I 100% a game, but Doom: The Dark Ages is a delight. Also, a very accomplishable achievement list for anyone interested.
May 30, 2025 at 12:54 AM
I'm playing a lot of Doom: The Dark Ages right now. It's really good, and the art design is wild. I really like the massively increased enemy count, feels a lot like old Doom games in that regard.

When the cat’s away, the mouse will play a bunch of niche records.

When I hit any adversity in life, I often think back to the Persona 4 difficulty selection screen that encouraged me to “please experience the tension”.

Just finished the Dark Forces remaster. When I was younger, I slept on this game, but loved the sequel.

The game is a lot more than a Doom clone, and has an impressive sense of level design and narrative for a game of its time.

Brutal to see that Polygon has been sold. It had an irreplaceable voice that I came back for every day. Even articles I didn’t agree with I read, because they were reasoned, interesting, and well written.

A soulless content farm that spoon feeds me what it thinks I want is deeply unappealing.

Took the plunge on a 9070 XT and then proceeded to play Duke 3D all weekend.

Might as well keep the Remedy kick going. Just finishing up the Foundation DLC of Control, which I left unfinished years ago.

Superb game from start to finish. An incredibly original game that is beautiful and unafraid to empower the player.

Just continuing to clean up some games in the backlog.

Finally completed Outer Wilds and Echoes of the Eye. Such fantastic games. I’m deeply impressed with the depth of their design.

Finished Astro Bot today. Fantastic game from start to finish.
February 18, 2025 at 12:30 AM
In other news I took a break from Astro Bot to return to playing Outer Wilds. Finally finished it all these years later.

Incredible game with a mind boggling amount of care and detail poured into it.
