Happy Thanksgiving!

If you'd like to show appreciation to Matt Parker (Stand-up Maths) this year, we're making him a birthday present that will (hopefully) be filled with 2025 Parker Squares, and could use, like, a thousand more 😅

To participate, fill out (by Dec 15): forms.gle/PepGSKb3wco9...
2025 Parker Squares
In this Numberphile video, Matt Parker pointed out how his 45th birthday in the year 45*45=2025 is going to be phenomenal. A few of us from the Stand-up Maths community have decided to gather 2025 Par...

So you know how sometimes you spend like 5 minutes generating an animation for some origami folding, go "okay that looks nice enough for friends," send it to Matt, only to have him go "I think I'll use this in a show and tease Alice for it folding sooooo slowly"?

Yeah that's my life now... 😅😊
Matt has one final show for 2025, and it's a big 'un!

He's heading to the Cambridge Theatre in London's West End for one night only!

More than half the tickets are already gone, and we know you can sell this one out!

I just got a +44 (UK country code) text from the bank to my Chinese phone number saying that I made a purchase in the US... I think I broke the bank's system... 😅

My boba runs these days have been me thinking, “I’ve done quite a bit of work and would like a break, but also wouldn’t it be nice to have some boba when I get back to work?”

Then I go get boba, walk around town for a bit, and when I get home… Oops

Just learned today that Welch Labs is also part of our little translation family?! The translator's been messaging me for a while now about inviting another creator and I didn't know who or how it was going until now.

It's so nice to see things growing this organically!!!

I have a defense date: May 14th at 2pm!!! 🥳

It's going to be hybrid, so if you want to come please message me for a link!!! I just don't want it too public.

If you're from one of my scicomm groups, feel free to ask Derek/Ben、Matt/Nicole/Alex、Steve/Amy/Charles if we don't know each other too well.

Best line I read regarding the rise of “Rednote” (Seems to be the most common translation?) on the Chinese socials:

The creators of Rednote were also stunned: “Does this mean we’ve made it abroad? We haven’t even thought of a good English name for the app yet to give foreigners a good experience!“

Just dropped our new origami paper with Erik and Ryuhei on arXiv! arxiv.org/abs/2412.02174

I was the main person pushing this out, though I'm not the best at the technical stuff so the coauthors helped a lot with honing in the language and proofs, couldn't have done it without them!
All Polyhedral Manifolds are Connected by a 2-Step Refolding

At the orthopedics to check up on my broken arm:
Doctor: “What happened?”
Me: “Skating accident.”
Her: “You’re like my fifth one this week”

5! By Tuesday morning!!! In a small collegetown city!… Tis the season, I suppose, but seriously be safe out there everyone. Too late for me 😅

Derek: “My son asked me a question so I decided to make a video”

Wow this place grew a lot…

Hi! I'm Alice! (I'm the worst at intros…) I do research in origami and make microbots, and do some scicomm things with YouTube creators, so that's fun.

Oh! Stand-up Maths (@standupmaths.bsky.social Matt you on here?) passed 1M views on Bilibili so I've been celebrating~
