📣 Exciting announcement: We have a new webcam live-streaming in Puget Sound!

The cam is located in Burien, Washington, overlooking East Passage between the mainland & Vashon Island. This area sees whale traffic, including orcas, humpbacks and more.

Since last year, we’ve been tracking a proposed tidal energy pilot project by Orcas Power & Light Cooperative (OPALCO), which seeks to install a floating tidal turbine in Rosario Strait—part of the designated critical habitat for endangered Southern Resident killer whales (SRKWs)

Congratulations to our Intern/Restoration Technician, Samantha Hazard, on her successful completion of her Green River College capstone project.

Her project focused on restoration efforts at Orca Conservancy’s Berrydale site, where she played a key role toward restoring this vital salmon habitat.

J Pod made a surprise visit into Northwest Bay, Nanoose, BC!

While Southern Residents frequent the waters around Vancouver Island, this seems to be the first time in recent years they have been documented in the bay.

They were traveling with T100E Tharaya, T100B Freya, T100B1 Seird, & the infamous T49A2 Jude, who you may remember from his time spent in Barnes Lake

We have some incredibly exciting news to share! J Pod has a new calf! Designated J63, we observed this little one traveling with J40. This will be her first known calf! While we have no immediate health concerns at the moment, we’ll continue to update when we can.

BREAKING NEWS!

A new calf has been discovered with J Pod! The calf was seen traveling alongside J40 Suttles and has been given the alphanumeric designation J63!
We have some incredibly exciting news to share! J Pod has a new calf! Designated J63, we observed this little one traveling with J40. This will be her first known calf! While we have no immediate health concerns at the moment, we’ll continue to update when we can.

Thank you so much to all of our volunteers and Free the Green for helping make our “128 Trees for L128” planting event a success!

We had initially set out plant 128 trees, but thanks to everyone’s generous donation we more than doubled that amount and funded 340 trees!

We caught up with J Pod again last afternoon before they exited Puget Sound.

Our encounter was brief, but we were able to get some good looks at J45 Se-Yi-Chnn & his big sister J40 Suttles, along with J41 Eclipse & her two youngest daughters J58 Crescent & J62.

There have been multiple family groups of Transient/Bigg’s killer whales spending time in Puget Sound & on Thursday we caught up with the T124As at Elliot Bay in Seattle!

The wait is over! The new Southern Resident flashcard deck is now available!

The new deck features the newest members J62, L127 Scuba, and L126 Ken, as well as updates to existing members like L115 Mystic, a sprouting male, and K37 Rainshadow, who has a new notch on his dorsal fin.
