I never thought that when I started writing reviews I’d reach the 15th anniversary of operatraveller.com. But along the way I’ve had the privilege of watching young artists bloom, to follow others as they grow their repertoire, and make some wonderful friends along the way. Here’s to the next 15!

Curtain calls after Lucrezia Borgia at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. What a spectacular assumption from Pratt who rose to a thrilling final scene that was just riveting. An excellent ensemble cast in a staging by Bernard that was equally riveting and full of drama.

I’m delighted to be back at the Maggio Musicale Florentino for Lucrezia Borgia. With Pratt, Barbera, Palazzi, Verrecchia & many more. Bisanti conducts Bernard’s staging

Curtain calls after an enjoyable Entführung aus dem Serail at the Teatro Regio Torino. A youthful cast with a fresh approach singing with real stylishness under Capuano’s lively direction. Fau’s staging was picturesque.

Curtain call after Caterina Cornaro at the Festival Donizetti Opera. Remigio, Scala & Priante gave it immense amounts of passion while Frizza was reliable in the pit. The staging was a total mess, making a simple plot into something incoherent. A shame because this work has a lot going for it

Bologna, I adore this city but it can’t be denied that it has a huge antisemitism problem

Curtain call after Nabucco at the Teatro Comunale Pavarotti-Freni in Modena. A decent evening in the theatre in a thoughtful staging that was full of symbolism - if you could interpret it. Musically the highlight was Zanetti’s terrifically sprightly conducting

Curtain calls after Götterdämmerung at the Comunale Bologna. A night that will stay long in the memory with sensational choral singing, orchestral playing of sheer poetry and sung with genuine generosity across the board. This cycle has been a triumph for Lyniv & her forces.

They lined the chorus along the side of the room and it was spectacular. It was so LOUD. And this chorus is without a doubt the finest in 🇪🇺🇮🇹

Curtain calls after the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos production of Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. A tremendous evening in the theatre. Sequeira’s Angelica was deeply moving, while Gianni Schicchi had a terrific ensemble cast having the time of their lives. De Angelis’ staging was most engaging

Curtain call after Faust at the Palau de les Arts in València. Erath’s staging was an incoherent jumble of ideas, lacking in the basic ability to tell a story. Fortunately as expected here the orchestral playing was superb and Iniesta was a glorious Marguerite.
