In 2025, the German federal government committed to adopting Open Document Format (ODF) as a national standard by 2027.

Yesterday, the European Commission’s public consultation on the Open Digital Ecosystems Strategy closed. At OFE, we welcomed the chance to share how open source can strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty, cybersecurity, and competitiveness.

Last Friday at the EU Open Source Policy Summit 2026, OFE, Open Source Initiative, and Open Knowledge Foundation launched Open Technology Research, a partnership to advance evidence-based policymaking and global research on the impacts of open technologies.

Astor Nummelin Carlberg is stepping back as OFE's Executive Director after 4 excellent years, but will remain on the Board. Starting March, Laszlo Igneczi takes over as ED, bringing extensive experience from his time at BEREC Office and the Hungarian Permanent Representation to the EU.
