I'm sorry, but "they took over the whole federal payments system, fired the career staff, and won't let anybody see what they're doing" is not a situation in which you wait for more information. It's a situation in which you assume the worst. There's no explanation for it other than rampant crimes.

A trans woman in Los Angeles tried to get a new passport (no matter what gender marker), since her old one had expired. She was denied a valid passport, and threatened with arrest if she continued to refuse to leave. This is a terrifying development.
There is now a de facto travel ban on trans people in the United States.
