A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

Surprised (not surprised) in a Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy search for Hypatia (philosopher/mathematician) in the 14 pages of results there is only one result on page 10 for the actual person (not journal/book titles refs). And that’s to use her murder as context of an ancient bloke’s plight.

Replicating the unconscious working memory effect: a multisite Registered Report

Almost always we average responses thus equating response variability with noise.
Well, we shouldn't because variability is also signal, not noise to be entirely discarded.

SEP Entry on Higher-Order Theories Gets Worse
I am currently very, very busy, and I am not just talking about my attempt to get the true secret ending in my NG+ play through of Black Myth: Wukong, or how many celestial ribbons I need to upgrade my gear 😉 But seriously things are pretty hectic for me all around. At LaGuardia I am teaching four classes in our short six week winter semester (General Psychology, Ethics and Moral Issues, Critical Thinking, and Introduction to Philosophy) and at New York University I am filling in as an adjunct for one semester teaching two undergraduate classes (Philosophical Applications of Cognitive Science and Minds and Machines).

people sure love to complain that it is hard to say what 'physical' means as a way of criticizing physicalism but doesn't the same problem plague 'non-physical' and dualism?

this paper on why biological computation is special (& necessary for consciousness) by @jaanaru.bsky.social, is as usual, very good & maybe the best one yet on the topic

but why doesn't the argument apply to e.g. motor control too?

Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵
