OG Concept for Lotus had her as a nonbender until we toyed with the concept of someone who was just untalented.
She's very much of the opinion that not being instantly good at something means it is not meant for you.
Gonna have fun exploring this as I've felt this about my writing off and on.

As it turns out, it doesn’t take a very large rock to clog up someone’s throat; or much earthbending skill to lodge it into place; and discarding the evidence is as easy as bending it right back into the floor it was pulled from. Sure, it had taken a long time for him to die; it hadn’t been efficient—but it had been intimate, and felt natural, as if it was something she’d been born to do. Plus, it was the first time anything he’d done had satisfied her in a long while.

Flint focused every bit of his attention on the woman who, upon seeing the Dai-Li agents, spared no second glance at her surroundings and gave little indication of emotion or interest. As if she were taking a walk in the palace garden but found it unsatisfactory and in need of landscaping. According to her file, she probably had; she’d had a long list of motivations to kill the Earth King, and it was possible the garden was somewhere on that list. Lotus of the esteemed Te Family. A spiteful, poisonous, serpent-like being with a sharp tongue, a laundry list of infractions and enemies in the palace. Responsible for the firing of the last head of the Dai-Li; and a close confidant of Long-Feng, if the rumors were to be believed. Her file also said she was attractive. That proved to be accurate. The glowing green crystals of the station seemed to dance across her flawless features, the smooth porcelain of her skin and the fall of her loose brown hair draping on her shoulders.

It was odd to see Lao in charge of it all, but with his parents on a business trip to Omashu he seemed eager to prove his skills as the head of the house. His command of the staff was impressive. There were plenty of people twice his age with less skill; Lao knew who was best suited for which task and how many to assign to any chore to ensure efficiency. It was hard to rationalize how the little scamp who once put mud in her sister’s shoes now ran a fully staffed estate. The fledgling Beifong heir seemed to have everything figured out from the very second she — the current dilemma — arrived at his doorstep shaking and sobbing. Shuzen gave Vanda a slight nudge forward; they could excuse themselves now and he didn’t mind looking rude. Not to this liar. But Vanda didn’t move with him. Instead, she held out her hands in what seemed to be a comforting gesture. “I’m so sorry, but maybe I can arrange for someone to help you. I’m actually on my way to the Beifong estate—” “The Beifongs never do anything! Never have, never will.” Spittle flew from his passionate oration. “Oh well, I-I can talk to them. I am a daughter of Governor Te and our family has—” “Te?” he stopped, his voice flat and full of gravel. Vanda, sensing the sudden shift in the demeanor, hesitated before meekly offering her response. “Yes?” He spat on the ground in Shuzen’s direction. “That family that’s endorsing those ash fuckers out west!” The crowd that had been moving along seemed to freeze in place at his exclamation.

Chapter 6 is up.
Lee was mid-bite again, so Vanda wasn’t expecting an immediate answer. Still, he appeared to mull it over a little longer before responding. “Suppose it’s more like sisters in arms—the village is sort of a familial unit.” He went back to shoveling another bite of rice into his mouth, eating like someone was going to take it from him, chewing it before continuing. “They kinda lumped me in by extension.” Lumped in by extension? Maybe she had more in common with Lee than just their current run of luck. She thought to ask him to elaborate on that, but decided she was prying enough as it was. “Are they bad cooks?” Vanda asked. “Most of them. Kimyo seems to think choking someone with rice is the same merit as getting them into a chokehold on the mat.”
