Also - Super Sentai has allowed me to make friends around the globe, and I hold that dearly.

And I ewspecially want to remember Diamond. May you rest in peace, your art will always be with me.
So.

After 50 years of a continuous run on television Super Sentai has ended (or, at least, entered a 10 year long hiatus)

And being a fan, that actually hits me.

A Thread on why these silly stories matter

To me, at its heart, Super Sentai is a franchise about ordinary people working together to make the world a better place.

To paraphrase the anniversary song "Super Sentai Hero Getter":

Maybe we can transform, too, if we just remember their stories?

That's something a lot of queer people can relate to.
February 8, 2026 at 3:18 PM
There was a post going around on tumblr once, asking why there are so many queer fans of shows Like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider.

And someone replied that at their core these are shows about transforming into better versions of yourself to protect the ones you love.
February 8, 2026 at 3:17 PM
And that's what they've done to me, too.

Super Sentai inspired me to be better. To grow. To hope. To try to do my best every day, and to try to make the world a better place as well.

And I don't think I'm the only one.
February 8, 2026 at 3:15 PM
The question is asked why these stories matter.

The answer given is that they inspire us.

The tales of larger then life heroes, and the struggle of people, and people becoming heroes inspire us to grow and become better ourselves

And that's why they matter.

And superficialties set aside, Super Hero Senki ends up being this really interesting metanarrative about the importance of stories, where the heroes visit Japanese Folk Tales like "Journey to the West" and the Legend of the eigth Samurai.

There's something so amazing about two shows both with half a century under their buckle celevbrating their legacy.

That moment where Akarenger (the leader of the first Sentai Gorenger) and Kamen Rider #1 come in to save the day, reprised by their original actors, is hype beyond compare.

As I said, Zenkaiger was an anniversary season, that also coincided with the 50th Anniversary with the sister Franchise "Kamen Rider".

And thus a crossover anniversary special was made, Super Hero Senki

That encapsulates Zenkaiger to me. This unwavering willingness to believe in a better future.

And it helped. It started reshaping my mind into a more hopeful person. Being infused with 25 minutes of pure hope will do that to your brain.

It had an intense impact on me.

And in a scene at the end Kaito reflects on how that was actually fun, and that it made it seem that friendship with the enemy is actually possible, and that peaceful coexistence is possible for those who seek it.
February 8, 2026 at 3:00 PM
There's that one seemingly filler episode where the tojitendo create a monster that just ends up inviting everyone to play silly beach games., and it makes the Tojitendo troops engage in some actual fun with the Zenkaiger.

He never stops hoping and believing in good things and the importance of his values.

And this inspires the people arround him as well.

it changes the antihero pirate Zox Goldtweaker for the better, and ends up redeeming the villainous Stacey.
February 8, 2026 at 2:57 PM
the main protagonist, Kaito/Zenkaiser, is this silly idiot who never stops believing in the goodness of people, and the tojitendo throw so much shit at him, they brainwash his father and use him as a weapon against him, yet he never gives in.

It is incredibly hopeful during this. Like, this could be such a dark show, but its not. It is one of the most silly sentai series, it is amazingly funny, and approaches its subject matter with surprising depth of nuance

And in this world it is up to the human Kaito Goshikida and his four Robot buddies (and later the Goldtweaker Pirates) to defend it from the evil Tojitendo empire.

So its a show about a found family defending the world from a fascistic empire.

Okay let me explain.

In Zenkaiger the evil Tojitendo Empire tries to rule the entire multiverse. But just as it almost succeeds the last two free worlds, our world and Kikaitopia, get accidentally fused together.

Kikaitopia being a world of living robots.
February 8, 2026 at 2:51 PM
Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger kinda ended up permanently rewiring my entire brain.
