From 22nd Dec 1940 for two nights, about 1,000 people died in Manchester's Christmas Blitz. My mother was aged eight and a bomb destroyed the family's home in Hulme while they were in it. They saved themselves by diving under the kitchen table - mum, dad, three kids, budgie.
