Oct 19, 1985: 40 years ago, the 1st Blockbuster Video opened in Dallas, TX with over 8,000 VHS tapes. #80s By 1988 there were 400 stores and the franchise peaked at over 9,000 locations. It wasn't our first VHS rental store, but I can't even count how many movies I rented there over the years.
