Happy #ManateeMonday!

#DYK Although they are nicknamed "sea cows", the closest relative to today's manatees is actually the elephant! The nickname "sea cow" is most likely in reference to the manatee's slow nature and large stature.

Oceana joined a community-led cleanup in Hopkins this week, collecting 60 bags of garbage! 👏💪 A powerful reminder that protecting our reef starts with us. 💙

This weekend, let’s cut down on single-use plastics & keep trash where it belongs — not in our sea. 🌊

#ThrowbackThursday 🌊🇧🇿 Five years ago, #Belize made history by banning #gillnets! The Fisheries Resources (Gill Net Prohibition) Regulations 2020 have since protected marine habitats, promoted #sustainablefishing, and strengthened marine conservation in Belize.

🎃 Creepy. Scary. Terrifying… plastic pollution! 👻

They haunt our waters, choke marine life, and never truly die. 💀 But here's the twist, we created this monster, and we can stop it.🌊 Together, we can keep the real horror out of our seas.💙

Southern stingrays have a chilling trick to vanish from sight! 😱 When danger approaches, they use their wide fins to bury themselves in sand, disappearing into the seafloor like underwater ghosts, staying hidden from predators like hammerhead sharks!

You're not the only one waiting on the weekend!

Okay, maybe this brown pelican isn't waiting for the weekend, just his next meal. These coastal birds usually feed close to shore and spend much of their downtime resting on docks and beaches.

Lurking in reef crevices, the green moray eel looks slimy and supernatural. But that eerie green color? It's not its skin! 👀Although they appear green, moray eels have brownish or grey skin that mixes with a layer of yellow mucus, causing a green hue to appear.

🦁🐟👻 Spooky fact: The beautiful #lionfish is actually a nightmare to our reef. With no natural predators in the Caribbean, these invasive hunters devour native fish and upset the balance of our marine ecosystems.

Keep our reef from becoming ghost towns: eat lionfish!
