OMG OMG. I think Lawrence O’Donnell has just convinced me that I was wrong in my views of Chuck Schumer and of the resolution of the shutdown.
It's very hard, probably impossible, to understand what is going on when so much of it is hidden behind closed doors. That is a situation I can't abide.

Lawrence O'Donnell is magically turning the Democratic capitulation into a victory! How does he do that?

I have to take back some of what I said. Those eight Dem cowards who just stabbed America in the back were only taking the fall for a whole bunch more who were in more vulnerable positions (e.g., up for re-election sooner). Dems want to know why people don't like or trust them? THIS IS IT!

It seems to me that the only thing that will dislodge this fake stalemate (in which Trump refuses to release the funds, trying to force the Democratic party to choose between healthcare and feeding people) is a huge demonstration that the American people hold Trump responsible. SO VOTE!

Okay, Americans, step right up and make your choice! No health care or no food! Or how about BOTH?

I'm probably the last to hear about this, but now we're going to have American troops in Gaza? Or alternatively, with these evil bozos in charge, how could it possibly go right?

Oh, aargh! I've been having a pesky thought, which I thought I'd share here and see if anyone cares to argue me out of it. However, as soon as I logged on and looked at the first few posts, I began to feel overwhelmed by the negativity and fatalism. Whew!

Mahmoud Khalil being deported now? It's impossible to keep track of all these horrors. There's only one of me to pay attention to Trump's army of nightmares.

The departure of local police to go work at ICE as masked thugs (according to Mother Jones) may substantially improve the humanity and integrity of local police forces. Wouldn't that be nice!

All this posturing by the administration and its adjuncts is just so much cosplay for them. I don't believe we have (or anyone has) any reality or substance for them, not even each other.

I always thought the function of SCOTUS is to interpret the Constitution and define its jurisdiction. Question: Are they SCOTUS allowed to nullify the Constitution?

It is simplistically obvious, only natural to believe that more powerful equals better, even though a modicum of reasoning and ability to plan ahead makes clear that the capacity to force your way on others doesn't mean that your way is better or that your way won't have catastrophic consequences.

So many times I've listened to Colbert's opening monologue, laughed, been impressed at the wit, and been glad he could do that so publicly and successfully. ...I think their whole strategy is built upon RELENTLESS escalation. We can't allow ourselves to be boiled frogs.

I just watched this year's Macy's Fireworks. And then I was moved to read Frederick Douglass's 1852 oration about the Fourth of July. If you'd like to read it yourself: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wh...
