I think the fact that it's not even a given (absent the inevitable march of nature) that Trump will actually go of his own accord is part of that calculation.
I know a lot of good Americans are hoping for a return to normal once Trump goes, but it’s not going to happen for one reason: the nation chose Trump once and having seen what he was like it chose him again. There’s no trust left with international former partners. It could just keep happening.
