In between, on a light gray background textured to look like paper, is this excerpt from the fanfic: "So much for not gloating," said Light. "I lost everything that mattered to me at eighteen, L. The least you can do is let me lick my wounds in peace." So much for not caring. Light's emotions showed clearly now, and L kicked himself for not seeing the answer sooner. All his life, Light had been treated with respect, and he had closed himself off all the same. What spurred Light into honesty wasn't sympathy, but the lack of it. Contradiction. Dismissal. Mockery. L could certainly give him that.
