The cosmos will be waiting for us tomorrow.” Clap. “What do you suppose we can do to convince the hippogryphs to join with us?” Decadence asks with a faint twinge crossing her features for a moment. “I would have thought they’d be all too eager to be part of the Empire after we defeated the Storm King for them.” Clap. “Hmm…” Fleur de Lis twirls a lock of her mane and shakes her head. “Perhaps therein lies the problem. They are cautious of how easily we crushed their enemy. That queen of theirs…” She levitates one of the figures standing on the map of Equestria, depicting the hippogriff monarch Novo. “I cannot blame her for being suspicious after the hardship her people had to endure.” Clap. “Bah!” The grunt turns into a sneer, glaring down at the southern peninsula. “What reason do they have to be afraid of us? Our citizens are prospering, our economy is booming, we have never been defeated in open combat, we have the greatest mages in the world. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain by being a part of the Empire.” Clap. “Consider the optics, though, Empress.” Fleur feeds some magic into the bubble placed over the map so that it spreads over the peninsula and into the sea. “These creatures have spent years in seclusion, and now you are asking them to put themselves in a cage. To say nothing of the fact that they are creatures of the air, fliers detest the idea of being confined.” “Spike!” By the time he turns in the voice’s direction, Ember is already upon him, striding forcefully in her approach. This abrupt swinging motion that comes with his repositioning causes them to collide with each other, an impact that knocks both dragons off-balance with squawks of alarm. “O-oh, sorry!” Spike blurts out, and he starts to reach out for Ember, to help steady her, but she growls and pushes back. He gasps at the sensation of their chests mashing together. “Thought you could get the upper hand on me again, did you?” the blue dragon hisses and scoffs, sneering derisively. “Well, you’re not going to find that so easy to do now!” She pushes forward with her chest pushed out, and there’s a lot of chest to push, huge globes bigger than pumpkins. “Um…I’m sorry, Ember, did I do something wrong?” he asks, clenching his jaw as he tries to maintain his composure. He feels he ought to back away from this confrontation, not wanting to risk upsetting Ember any further, to say nothing of the scene they’re making, the other gala guests staring. He looks over his shoulder and calls out, “Honey? Is that you?” A low chuckle comes from the gloom. “It could be,” says a voice he doesn’t recognize, amid continued approaching footsteps, and then a figure emerges from the treeline at the camp’s edge. Broadening his focus, Charles extends his awareness outward. They are there, at the fringe of perception. Their existence is immaterial, yet they exert their will upon the physical world. They are dark, phantasmal, and oh so hungry. Their very presence is indicative of their intent. They have judged him to be a suitable target to prey upon. “Ah.” He chuckles. “Well that just won’t do at all.” With a smirk on her lips, Cassandra presses on the intercom button. “Attention, all office employees,” she says, the sound of her honey-sweet voice echoing in from the speakers outside her personal office. “The mandatory uniform inspection will begin momentarily. Please stand outside your workstation and await further instruction.” She chuckles to herself after she releases the button, taking a moment to lean back in her seat with her feet up on the table while she listens to the ensuing commotion. Through the misted windows which hem in the office, she can see figures moving as if in a fog, standing hurriedly and moving about. A susurrus of whispered voices seep around the doorframe, her long ears picking up the words of individual workers and making a note of how panicked each one sounds. Sparks dance in the wind, carried ever further away and spreading the devastation. And the mayhem is embodied by the nirik who run rampant through the ruined village. The kirin immolate into their enraged forms as if afflicted by a viral transformation, and where they meet they snarl and slash and spit at each other, hurling grievances and foul insults. Many of the kirin have fled, which is preferable to trying to stay behind and fight off the oncoming devastation, as any kirin who meets with a nirik is quick to turn themselves, giving over to their base anger, and thus the brawl grows yet more violent. Only Rain Shine stands amid the chaos, looking on in dismay as their home falls to shambles around them. To think that this is all the result of an argument that escalated into a full-blown war over the course of mere minutes fills the elder kirin with anguish. And, well, loath she may be to admit it, a little bit of anger. Maybe a lot of anger. She hasn’t felt angry for many a moon, and now she feels it boiling within her. She should leave while she can, but perhaps she can make good use of this moment. So with a stomp of her hoof, producing a thunderous shockwave that rocks through the village, she bellows, “ENOUGH!” “What is the meaning of this?!” The changelings freeze in place, rooted by terror, their joining abruptly forgotten. Queen Chrysalis lumbers into the bed chamber with heaving, ponderous motions. It’s a small place for two mere drones, and the space suddenly becomes claustrophobically tight as the monarch enters. Oryctes trembles in her presence, and Aphidoi clutches him protectively. “Have you forgotten your solemn duty to the hive?!” Chrysalis snarls and raps a fist over her sternum, her chest wobbling. “Have you chosen to so callously disregard your duty to me?!” “My Queen, please!” Aphidoi cries desperately, clenching her legs together and positioning her arms to cover Oryctes, to shield him as much as possible. “We are doing as you instructed! We are acting for the glory of the hive!” Chrysalis scoffs and sneers at them, down along the curving slopes of her front. “What kind of glory do you expect to bring with this paltry performance?!” She shakes her head and snaps her fingers, and her horn glows with a pulse of emerald light. “Enough! Up, the both of you!” Oryctes whimpers and shivers. Aphidoi gently strokes his cheek. She rises from him, and they both groan as she slides free from his length with a pop, then helps lift him as well. There are disapproving hisses from Chrysalis in the background.

As Sunset Shimmer steps over the threshold of the library’s entrance, she promptly staggers, her center of balance disrupted. “Huh?” she grunts, the sound muffled through her clenched jaws. Most magic is disrupted within these walls. We have to, uh, do all our work by hand.” The door to the observation deck slides open. Although there doesn’t appear to be any readily apparent form of life inside the cell. “Promethea.” The Mew telepathically projects her thoughts into the tank, maintaining a cheery, upbeat tone even within her mind. “I hope you’re doing swell today.” She senses no response; a mighty wall of psychic force greets her. “Good, good, just as resilient as ever,” she continues unabated, chuckling and smiling to herself while she absently rubs her taut stomach. “Your performance has been quite stellar lately, your output went up another four percent in the past month.” The silence is deafening, a void of sensation threatening to overtake her at the slightest provocation. “Ngh…!” Promethea gasps and winces at the stabbing ache which she feels through her temple. “Did you say something?” Claire asks, turning back to look her way. It sets about taking a mop from the cart and starts swabbing it over the sticky puddles. It repeats this motion for a few seconds until it sees the thick strands of the mop head blackening and sloughing away into sludge. “!serusaem citsard eriuqer lliw siht ,raed hO” it announces cheerily. But before it can return to the cart for more supplies, its ear perks up at a sound approaching from down the hallway. Wet slaps. Heavy thuds. Garbled, choked wheezes of breath.
