It's been months in the planning, years in the dreaming, but my freelance marketing business is finally live: killer-marketing.com

To celebrate, I'm running two frankly ridiculous offers: 40% (FORTY percent) off website design and build, and a chance for a free (no strings) marketing review.

Read an article in the FT about the romance reader to hockey fan pipline, and got irrationally irritated that the author didn't know the genesis of "cinnamon roll" was an Onion headline, "Beautiful Cinnamon Roll Too Good For This World, Too Pure."

I've worked the salt mines of fandom. I KNOW. 😡

*falls down in a heap* I've spent the last 50 billion hours (rough estimate) working on the websites for my new business (freelance marketing for small businesses and authors) and... I'm finally done! So I'll be ready to launch in the next week. Phew. 🎉

Regret to inform that I am now on TikTok: www.tiktok.com/@nmartinwrit...

(I know, you didn't know I was secretly 18 years old, did you?)

I'm actually having fun posting dumb videos about books and writing, so if that's what you're into, be my friend.

Two of my favourite things: books and puppies.

Took quick trip to Oxford last week to visit family. Cinnamon, my dachshund niece, just wants to live free and chase pigeons. Dream big, little dog, dream big.

The Getaway is out in paperback today! 🥳 I can confirm that the paperback is very cute and small and perfect for shoving in a bag as you head off on your summertime adventures.

If you're looking for a twisty mystery-thriller set in an exotic location, pick it up. www.nicolamartin.com/the-getaway/

I've decided to make a light pivot from blogging to sending out a monthly e-newsletter, where I will... bascially blog, but you'll get it in your email inbox instead.

I'll be sending out the first of my monthly e-newsletters later this week, so please sign up for free at: www.nicolamartin.com/list/

I had a stress dream where I only had a month until an A-Level exam on a subject I'd never studied.

Woke up being like... huh. That sounds a lot easier than the thing I actually have to do, which is write another novel. 🫠

There comes a time in your life where you simply must begin making statements like: oooh, now that's a lovely viaduct.

Took a sunny walk from Pensford to (a part of Pensford I didn't mean to go to, and then back to the middle of Pensford, before going to) Stanton Drew. Ya girl loves a stone circle.

One of my favourite parts of being an author is getting to see my name on the flyleaf of a book. Look! It's meee. I wrote that! Makes me feel like a big kid.

I'm doing a final proofread of my third novel, #TheSpotlight, before it's bound up into ARCs (advance reader copies).

The German translation of #TheGetaway is officially out now, published by Tropen Verlag as #TheIsland and translated by Benjamin Mildner.

The German audiobook also comes out this week, read by Cornelia Tillmans. Danke schön!

How long does it take to write a book? For me:

📚 Two months of planning

📚 Six months to write a readable draft (I write a draft zero, plus another draft)

📚 Six months of structural edits (hell)

📚 A few weeks of line edits, copyedits, proofreading (here are my last few edit notes to myself)

Sunny days are for reading in the park. 🌞 (Yes, I have #selfemployedpersonprivilege and can skive off in working hours, but I'm also skint, so it balances out, right? 😆)

My most recent read is I Have Some Questions For You by Rebecca Makkai. 📚 #booksky

When people learn that I extensively plan my novels before writing them, their reactions range from "how on earth do you do that?" to "doesn't it get boring?"

Here's my secret: at least some of my plan turns out to be absolute dogshit and I have to replot on the fly. Keeps things interesting. 😅

Reading true crime alone in a forest.... A great thing to do... 👀 Definitely not an ironic way to get murdered. 😬

My current read is My Dark Places by James Ellroy, where he writes about his own mother's murder. A fascinating glimpse into LA in the 1950s, and the prose cuts like a knife. #booksky

It's all happening! #TheGetaway is in Kobo's Easter sale for just £1.99, but if you prefer something you can hold in your hands, the paperback is out in only 7 weeks. If you pre-order it, it'll be a lil gift from you to you when it drops through your letterbox. 🥰🎁

I love doing a zero draft of my novel, because I can just describe a reaction with the words FACE CRACK and not elaborate in the slightest. #amwriting

Murder? I hardly know 'er!

Last night, the year was 1929, the setting was a sumptuous country house (actually, a falling down community hall) and the murder weapon was POISON.

I had a lot of fun organising a little murder mystery evening for my Toastmasters (public speaking) club.
