Great day of documentary shooting with the legendary @andrewmanske.bsky.social for Rotating Planet. Black bear den in the middle of a recently burned forest was a highlight!

Science writers and journalists are often asked to moderate panels & other public conversations, but there are few training opportunities.

It's why @ljevanso.bsky.social & I are hosting Moderating for Impact at the World Conference of Science Journalists.

The flowers and mushrooms are still going strong in #JasperNationalPark. Hiked up Whistlers mountain this weekend. Glorious! Bonus: took the gondola down and saved the knees:)

Interesting nuances coming out of research by @gilbert-lab.bsky.social on the relationship between #ALAN and birds: "Overall, the birds that were most sensitive to light pollution in this study were the ones that had larger eyes on average for their body size." www.npr.org/2025/08/21/n...
Artificial light has essentially lengthened birds' day
Millions of audio recordings of hundreds of bird species have revealed that artificial light is making the birds wake up earlier and go to bed later.

Community recovery from a #wildfire “looks a bit like the EKG of a heart being able to absorb a shock,” Michael Higgins told me.

Thanks @abihayward4.bsky.social at
@cangeo.bsky.social for your support as I wrote this essay about #Jasper 's recovery.

I'm interviewing researchers about the impacts of artificial light on wildlife. Today, I learned that dung beetles roll their dung balls in straighter lines by orienting themselves with the Milky Way. THE MILKY WAY!!! This research first came out in 2013. #Beetlemania

I had the pleasure of being out on a wildfire documentary shoot with this legend last week. If you haven't seen Leanne Allison's work, I highly recommend starting with her NFB film Losing Blue, free to watch here: lnkd.in/eWxbgwxM

The call is coming from inside the house...A fabulous thread about a 2023 USO (unidentified seismic object) by @mikeachim.bsky.social
OK, this is wild.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

What the HELL?

In light of what's going on in the world, I'm going to just start flooding my feed with beautiful pictures to take your mind (and mine) off of things. Something quite different from me, a black and white from Kootenay National Park in BC. Enjoy!
