I remember when I thought turning 60 would make me "old." I love photographing the Australian night skies.
Lots of lovely sunspots!
Hopefully, this amount of sunspot activity translates to an outburst of the Aurorae in the coming days. I captured this image of the Sun using my DWARF 3 smart telescope, using its “Astro” function. 15th June, 2025, Sydney, Australia.

In complete contrast to the colours of my post last night (2nd June), today’s photo is of the Moon, looking very monochrome, indeed. This photo was taken using my DWARF 3 smart telescope. The Moon was 51% illuminated at the time, and its distance from Earth was 396,396 km (246,309 mi).

Here’s a photo of the Sun taken today, Friday, 30th May, from my home in Miranda, Australia, with my DWARF 3 smart telescope.

You make out several sunspots on the surface of our closest star, indicating potential increased activity for the aurora borealis and aurora australis.

It’s a landform that genuinely looks like the thing it’s named after. Horse Head Rock near Bermagui, Australia, even has a grassy mane! I photographed this natural wonder on May 3rd 2025, under the light of the stars and a setting moon.

Seeing this photo on my camera’s preview screen made me smile at its simplicity. I tipped the camera back on the tripod so it was pointing straight up and clicked the remote shutter’s button. Sometimes, it’s the simple things that bring so much joy.

The rusting remains of a 100-year-old barge rest in the waters of the Moruya River, Australia. The water’s still surface mirrors the rising Milky Way’s galactic core. The pink glow of Aurora Australis’s outburst colours the image’s bottom right-hand corner.

A colourful night scene near Bodalla, Australia, with green atmospheric airglow washing over the whole scene while the fading Aurora Australis skirts the horizon. The Small and Large Magellanic Clouds dominate the sky, along with a couple of companions that I’ve labelled in an accompanying image.

After a day of clear and blue skies, clouds moved in to obscure the view a few hours before Moonrise on Friday night, 14th March. Despite that, I managed to photograph glimpses of the partially eclipsed Moon when the clouds thinned out briefly.

A twelve-shot panorama of the Milky Way setting over the Tuross River shot in August 2024. The water’s surface was an almost perfect mirror. I used a Canon EOS 6D camera plus a Samyang 14mm f/2.4 lens @ f/2.4, and an exposure time of 25 seconds @ ISO 6400, to capture each image.

Here’s a seven-image vertical panorama of the Milky Way rising over the Tasman Sea at Gerroa, Australia, on 2nd Feb 2025. You can see the two Magellanic Clouds in the sky to the right of the Milky Way’s band of stars. Captured using the Samyang Lens Global AF 12mm F2 lens and a Canon EOS R camera.

Gorgeous Gerroa
Last Sunday night I shot this lovely scene of Orion, Taurus, & the Pleiades in the northwestern sky. I used the Samyang AF 12mm F2 lens on my Canon EOS R camera to create this image.

Samyang Lens Global recently invited me to try out their new AF 12mm F2 lens for the Canon RF-S mount. I finally took the lens out last night (Sunday, February 2nd, 2025) at Gerroa, Australia, where I captured Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS), the Moon, Venus, and the Chinese Tiangong Space Station!

A Green Flash at Sunset
On 26 December 2024, as the sun set over the Indian Ocean in Perth, Australia, I captured the atmospheric wonder known as the “green flash.” This was my first time photographing the emerald emission.
