In the third chapter (second pub) of my thesis, my co-authors & I assessed the stock composition of Atlantic #sturgeon captured in the Restigouche River & estuary (i.e., used genetics to determine where these fish came from). 🧬

it’s not everyday i can release a sturgie with one hand! 🧪👩🏻‍🔬🌎🌐

these small sturgeon may be tiny (& adorable) but they are also feisty & covered in super sharp scutes (like small serrated knives)

these scutes protect small sturgeon from predators so they can live to be big & old!

Validation of a microwave energy meter to non-lethally estimate energetic reserves in adult sturgeon
We successfully validated the Fatmeter as a tool to obtain precise, non-lethal estimates of whole-body energetic reserves in captive adult pallid sturgeon.

Hi All! My name is Nicole & I’m a #PhD Candidate at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, NB, Canada 🇨🇦 studying the life history responses of Atlantic & pallid #sturgeon to environmental change! I validate and/or employ non-lethal techniques to help protect these living dinosaurs!
