In honor of Pride, a nice Psychology Today post about gender fluidity & intersexuality in myths around the world, reminding us that gender & sexuality have been understood as spectrums for the entirety of human history. www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/hide...

Q: When did you realize you were old, sir?
A: Well, I guess it was when I found myself in the check-out line inexplicably holding a giant bag of these.

Digitizing more old photos. 1984 Rick says hello from the front steps of our house on the near west side of San Antonio. That's our neighbor's dog, Kenny. He didn't mind my cheesy mustache and unironic mullet. He was a good, nonjudgmental dog.

National Literacy Institute: 21% of adults in the US were illiterate as of 2024. 54% of US adults have a literacy below a 6th-grade level (20% are below 5th-grade level). Worldwide the US ranks 36th in literacy. This is horrifying. It also explains a lot.

Naturally, we will be looking for a Nico di Angelo who closely resembles the original Disney-Hyperion promotional art from 2007, since I know that is everyone's favorite depiction. 😏

Today's deep-cut deity: Alala, the personification of the war cry. This is the closest we have to a Greek god of screaming, which probably offers us a lesson. If life makes you want to scream, turn it into a war cry!

Happy May Day! Whether you celebrate it as the beginning of spring, or a day to mark the struggle for workers' rights, or as an international distress call derived from the French m'aider, 'help me,' all options seem appropriate this year!

Since I communicate primarily by writing, I had difficulty adjusting to the film industry, which conducts business 99% by phone calls and face-to-face meetings. I finally realized this is because no one wants written records of conversations that might leak out and embarrass anyone. Fair enough.

Got to see some early concept art for PJOTV season three monsters and beasties yesterday. Really not fair to tease this since it is still so far away, but Holy Hera it looks good! I'll just be over here squealing internally for the next couple of years until I can share it with you. Carry on.

On my plate this week:
Look over marketing and merchandising ideas for PJOTV season two.
Read / note a script for season three.
Edit a manuscript that I can't talk about yet.
Continue writing a manuscript (the third new Percy novel)
Have meetings on two other projects I can't talk about yet.

Today's deep-cut deity: Antheia, goddess of flowers. Antheia "flowering/blooming one" was an epithet used to describe both Aphrodite and Hera, but she also seems to have been a separate god, one of Aphrodite's attendants the Kharites. Antheia has been hard at work the past few days in Boston!

Happy Megalenses Ludi! From April 4-10, Ancient Romans honored Cybele, the Magna Mater (Great Mother), with games and plays. Originally an Anatolian deity, Cybele was incorporated into the Roman calendar, though some Romans complained that her pageants were too "Greek," not properly Roman enough. 🙄

Last week's turkey god got me thinking about other bird-related deities. Here's Nanshe, the Sumerian goddess of justice, dreams and marshlands, whose sacred bird was most probably the goose, as seen in the art! The Canada geese in Boston will be happy to hear they have proper god rep.

Today's deep-cut deity: Cybele, the Phrygian Mother Goddess (equivalent to Rhea). She was originally born a hermaphrodite named Agdistis, but the gods feared such a male/female being would be too powerful, so they "cut off the male organ." Stories of gender change & fluidity are as old as humanity.
