For the first few weeks, a seal pup’s whole world is mum. She nurses it with incredibly rich milk which is around 60% fat, & the pup will balloon in weight, sometimes gaining two kilos a day.

The pup doesn’t swim yet; that snowy fur isn’t waterproof, and the ocean is an unforgiving place if you’re basically wearing a waterlogged bathrobe. So it stays ashore, usually close to its mother, snoozing, stretching, flopping around awkwardly, and yelling its distinctive bleating call whenever she wanders off.
