My sudden rush of inspiration continues! I’ve been thinking a lot about California the last week or so. This afternoon, this poem “Long Beach” poured out of me in the sudden rush, based on fragments of memories from the time I spent in southern California five years ago.

Yesterday, I think I finished a poem I’ve been working on for over five years. “El Paso Brisket” is a poem about memory, fate, and violence, centered on a good memory from when I lived in El Paso in my early 20s, just before I deployed as a soldier and everything changed.

I woke up on this frigid snowy morning here in northern Wyoming to the magnificent news that my poem “Absolution” was nominated for the Pushcart Prize for Poetry by @thewayback2ourselves literary and arts journal!
I’m so grateful and so honored!

These four pages comprise the second-to-last draft (I think) of my poem “Ringbone Lake, Autumn”. I shared a very early draft of this poem on here back in late September, but I think now it’s finally settled in a space I’m happy with.

In the mountain’s lap

blue quietude
boulderfield
above the lake

cow moose
and her calf

wandering
the glacial creek

beside my lonely little tent
as I read Hemingway

far

from the doom
which will find me
come winter.

I believe I just added the final poem to the manuscript for my next poetry collection, Cabin Sketches. Stay tuned for release details next month and an early 2025 release date! This will likely be my last #poetry collection for a few years, so I’m packing it full of all sorts of goodies.

I am gathered
in yellow pools
of mountain lion irises

unaware
as I climb

up
into ochre tundra

pools of crusted snow

glacial granite

Precambrian

dusted
in lichens.

Ignorance
is bliss

and I am
in wild Paradise.

Apollo
shatters the Beaver Moon
with bronze hands
this morning
as he climbs
over the Badlands.

I trudge
through scintillating shards

bent
against
boreal weight.

The year is done.
