The connection for my book "Newport: Lovers and Dreamers and Us."

I am exploring the concept of love through Newport, RI history from the arrival of humans to the present day. How has our love evolved in practice and belief?

Celebrating the first full day of summer-

HERE COMES
by Shel Silverstein
Here comes summer,
Here comes summer,
Chirping robin, budding rose.
Here comes summer,
Here comes summer,
Gentle showers, summer clothes.
Here comes summer,
Here comes summer—
Whoosh—shiver—there it goes.

It's World Naturism Day (for the Northern Hemisphere) and for those who must wear clothes, it's Wear a Dress Day.

Make the choice to rebel today. Rebel against expectations. Explore a new way of existing. Explore your self.

Today is a day, as Pride begins, to be bold.

"Don't give up the ship!" Captain James Lawrence cried after being mortally wounded June 1, 1813 while battling a British vessel. Shortly afterwards, his men did surrender, but his words became the battle flag of his friend, Newport's Oliver Hazard Perry, the Hero of Lake Eerie.

Wishing everyone a Happy Pride.

From a historical perspective, rights are never given, always taken, and never, never politely.

Every right earned, every one, is earned through pain because every right denied grants somebody convenience. Nobody gives up convenience willingly. It must be drawn out.

Happy Rhode Island Day!

"First in war, last in peace!" RI was first to declare independence, on May 4, 1776, and last to ratify the constitution, on May 29, 1790.

We ratified conditionally, "the powers of government may be reassumed by the people whensoever it shall become necessary."

The only way to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom is to continue their fight to preserve freedom.

If you are fighting for your freedom and not mine, you are fighting for privilege, for fascism.

Freedom means freedom for all, not just for some. Justice for ALL or it is empty.

Newport was America's torpedo manufacturer during WWII, Melville was the PT fleet training and tactical development center (where JFK trained), and on May 6, 1954, the last German naval battle was fought in Block Island Sound.

Germany's surrender 80 years ago today was cause for celebration.

Newport, RI is founded by Europeans on the site that had been home to the Pokanoket people (later the Wampanoag) for about 12-15,000 years.

The southern end of Aquidneck Island (Rhode Island to the Europeans), Newport would later split into the towns of Newport and Middletown.
