Jackie went home yesterday with her freshly-fulled cloth, ready to hem into a beautiful new blanket.

There's still room in our June Foundations classes if you'd like to go home with your very own heirloom (and a new set of skills)! newburyschoolofweaving.org/programs

Shearing day for Fleece to Fulling with Mary Lake! We got a crash course in shepherding, shearing, and skirting a small flock, the fleece of which will become the weft in our participant’s blankets. Fiber is farming, and today’s work will ground our blankets down to the land they came from.

Our Golden Anniversary year has begun and the Fleece to Fulling great wheels are humming on the porch! The goal for our spinners today is 800 yards, roughly half a pound of wool. Give them a big round of encouragement as they embark on their monumental projects!

Tomorrow the school will open for the 2025 season, marking fifty years from our founding by Norman Kennedy in 1975. Our year begins with Fleece to Fulling, a month-long intensive program where participants will make blankets from shearing to fulling the cloth.

Our new Instructor and Office Clerk Emma has been hard at work preparing the chapel for Monday’s kick off of the 2025 season. Today she turned her attention to practicing tying on a new warp to an old one, a skill we don’t often get a chance to teach.

We’re so grateful to neighbor Jane Booth for gifting us a book of early photos of our Methodist chapel home. You can see the original steeple, door surrounds, and Newbury Seminary in this 1860s image.

Spring has sprung, and so have our Georgia Sea Island brown cotton seedlings. Cotton has been at the center of some of humanity’s brightest and darkest chapters, and we hope these plants will help us to better appreciate its past, present, and future.

We are a hard to categorize organization. Craft school is one way to describe us, but we’re a museum of sorts as well.
