I enjoyed reading this. I agree that throughout the last 10 years or so, CS has become a lot more empirical.

This also means that there is a lot of work for theoretical computer scientists out there.

The simplex algorithm is super efficient. 80 years of experience says it runs in linear time. Nobody can explain _why_ it is so fast.
