Draft genome of Carabidae: Carabus depressus just dropped.

Regardless of the high fragmentation we got a 98% Busco score from a specimen that was stored in Ethanol for almost 5 years. First a few days in a back pack and then at -20 °C until extraction. Pretty cool stuff!

Damn you Calosoma (Callisthenes) breviusculum & C. erwesemanni!
Why do you gotta be like that?

Found a neat rust based tool. Maybe I'll try getting it running in one of my pipelines... Right after I do the 100 other things I need and want to do.

Sculpturing is going to be the worst of doing all this. The balance between illustration and realism is hard

Working on a poster, and I may have spent a little more time than necessary on this beetle illustration.
Theres only one blurry photo of a live Calosoma (Carabophanus) gestroi on the internet.

Ok, last bit of bike polo chatter for now. Plus I've never watched myself play, so I've gotta save this clip here. Still riding the high of winning a tournament!

Anyone able to confirm Colobostruma elliotti for these minuscule #ants I found today south of Sydney, #Australia?

There are barely any photos of this group, they are so small and hard to photograph.

So a non academic/entomology thing. I played in a Hard Court Bike Polo tournament today and our team (Brocolis) ranked 3rd and came first in the single elimination bracket!
Super cool to actually be first place on the podium. Thanks a ton for hosting Lausanne!

Go ride bikes with your friends

Lots of great talks and discussions had at #EntSoc24, I'm bummed it's over! Hopefully I can make it to another one sooner rather than later!

!!!

initially thought they were an oribatid beetle mite... then freaked out upon taking a few photos - realizing they were BAEUS - a *tiny* (~600µm) parasitic wasp!

Lost them after trying to stop lens down for a bit more depth of field! Underneath a log, NE Oklahoma

I presented the important part of my thesis work at Biology24 in Zurich yesterday. It was great and I had a ton of interesting questions. A few other museum folk were very interested in my molecular lab methods!
