Ardbert Hylfyst: Here we are. It’s nothing too special, I’ll admit. Just a bit of a nice view- somewhere to sit. To talk a while. Ardbert Hylfyst: Always gives me perspective, places like this. Used to find myself climbing all sorts of cliffs looking for ones like it. Some high-up perch to look out and see the world small and crawling onwards without me, in ever-present persistence. Some... built-in determination to live. Ardbert Hylfyst: It’s harder, here. This air bubble might never fade. There’s life on this ocean floor that will never recover. It’s funny- the water made it hard to see, blurred vision and cast out light until you never knew what lived below. But you could rely on it. You knew it was there, in some strange, mysterious shape, some whispering of life below. Unknowable, untouchable. Ardbert Hylfyst: And then the waters left, and the air rushed in. Clear and bright and suddenly this whole world is here for all to see- and it’s struggling. It’s- …I don’t know. The world is healing, but here- these are bad times with no good answer. Things are different here. Ardbert Hylfyst: Look- I’m not here to tell you it’ll get better here. But I’ve sat, and I’ve watched. The Ondo know better than any of us what’s been lost. But sit down here and watch them live… What can they do but keep living? Celebrating the passing of time, each other, meals. Suppose it might look irresponsible, to some. Like they don’t see it- the way it all bears down on them. Ardbert Hylfyst: I don’t know. Maybe. Can’t say I rightly know what it’s like for any of you lot that still came out here to walk through such a sorry sight. But you’re here, aren’t you- ha. Takes my breath away, just a bit. The persistence of you. That come hell or high water, you’re here. No matter how doomed or damned or dark the skies, here you are. Ardbert Hylfyst: The sun will rise tomorrow. It won’t be all better, here. But the Ondo will tend to each other, and with that, tend to what’s left. What’s changed will be new, some day. A day at a time, aye- gritting their teeth along the way. But there’ll be laughter, too. Promise me that, then, heroes. That you’ll be there to see it.
